Acting Workshop held in English: Introduction to Sanford Meisner Techniques Last June 2009, we had the pleasure to have Scott Williams holding 2 days Master Class. The course was providing our members with an introduction to Sanford Meisner techniques. Our members were thrilled and dedicated. HKTA Committee and Artistic Director would like to thank him deeply! Here is what he has to say about the two days workshop: ''At The Impulse Company in London, we teach a year-long programme for actors which takes our participants through a simple but effective series of exercises towards our definition of acting: "living truthfully under a given set of circumstances." Trying to compress that year down to a two-day workshop is less a matter of shrinkage as a matter of surgery. What will be left off, and what will be effective training for Hong Kong actors? On the first day of our course, we looked at an exercise called 'Repetition,' which encourages actors to clearly observe their partners and richly respond to what they see. This is a core exercise in what we do, based in the idea that what happens to you as an actor doesn't depend on you, but on what your acting partner does to you. Then, on the second day, we took that exercise and applied it to text, examining the challenge of how one can observe and respond underneath the given circumstances of the script. Our students got the opportunity to 'perform' an initial reading of the text and then to analyse the text for performance. Much information was omitted. But what remained was information central to our teaching: your job as an actor is rooted in concepts of aliveness in the moment of action, and our exercises are a direct and simple way to reproduce that effect every time you perform.'' S.W Thank you Scott and we look forward for another class!
